Which playgrounds still work in winter and after rain

Most of what makes a park good in July makes it unusable in February. The features that carry a site through the off-season are a different list.

Seasonal remarks appear in about two in five of the places we have indexed, and they split cleanly. Summer complaints are about heat and shade. Winter and wet-weather complaints are about surfaces, drainage and where the sun is.

The features that make a park good in one season frequently work against it in the other, which is why a park you loved in August can be a poor choice in January.

Shade inverts

The most useful thing about a heavily shaded playground in summer is the exact thing that makes it unpleasant in winter. Deep tree cover keeps a site cold, keeps the ground damp, and keeps snow and ice on the equipment long after an open site has thawed.

In the cold months the parks that work are the open ones — the ones our shade attribute marks as full sun. A south-facing open play area on a clear winter day is warm enough to use; the shaded one two streets over is not.

This is one case where reading our shade value backwards is the right move. If it is January, a none reading is a recommendation.

Surfaces decide what happens after rain

Every material behaves differently once it is wet, and the difference is larger than in dry conditions.

Poured rubber drains and dries fastest. A rubber-surfaced playground is often usable within an hour of rain stopping, which makes it the most reliable wet-season choice.

Wood chips absorb water and stay saturated. They do not become dangerous, but they become the reason a child comes home filthy, and they hold cold.

Sand compacts when wet, loses its impact absorption, and stays wet for a long time. Wet sand is also the material most likely to end up in the car.

Artificial turf depends entirely on installation quality. Well-drained turf is fine. Badly drained turf holds water at the base and produces both puddles and a smell, and several accounts describe exactly this at specific sites.

If you are choosing a park the day after heavy rain, the surface reading is the single most useful attribute we hold.

What actually carries a site through the off-season

Four features come up repeatedly in accounts of parks used year-round.

A paved loop. When the grass is unusable, a paved path is the whole visit. A child on a scooter or a bike does not care about the temperature, and an adult can walk. Roughly a third of the sites we index have one and it is the strongest off-season feature there is.

A pavilion or covered area. Not the same as shade. A roof lets a family sit through a shower rather than leaving, and it makes a cold-day visit possible with something warm from a thermos.

Hard courts. A basketball court is playable in conditions where a field is a mudbath, and it dries far faster.

A parking lot rather than street parking. The walk from the car matters more when it is cold or raining, and a hundred yards across wet grass is the difference between going and not.

Winter-specific things worth knowing

Metal equipment. Slides and bars in shade on a cold day are genuinely painful to touch. Sites with plastic equipment are more comfortable in winter and hotter in summer.

Restrooms close. Many municipal restrooms are seasonal and shut from autumn to spring, which turns a facility-equipped park into one without. Our entries note seasonal closure where visitors describe it, but this is one to verify against the city’s own page.

Splash pads are off. Obvious, but a site whose main draw is water is a much smaller park for eight months of the year.

Ice on rubber and metal. Poured rubber holds ice in shaded corners. Open sites clear faster.

How to use the index off-season

The filters do not have a winter mode, but the readings work if you invert two of them.

Filter for a walking trail and courts rather than for shade. Read a full sun shade value as a positive. Prefer poured rubber for the day after rain and avoid it on an icy morning. Check whether the restroom note mentions seasonal closure.

And treat any seasonal note on an entry as the most valuable line on the page, because it is the one thing in our index that changes predictably rather than randomly — a splash pad that ran from late May to early September last year will do roughly the same this year, which makes it genuinely plannable.

The shoulder seasons are where the index earns its keep

Peak summer and deep winter are easy to plan for, because the constraint is obvious. It is April, May, September and October that catch people out.

These are the months when a splash pad might or might not be running, when a restroom might or might not have reopened, and when an unshaded park is pleasant in the morning and unpleasant by two. They are also the months with the most usable weather, so they produce the most trips.

The practical approach in a shoulder month is to check the seasonal note before anything else. Where an entry records that a water feature runs from late May, that single line resolves the whole question in April. Where an entry records that restrooms close outside the summer season, the same applies in October.

Drainage is a site attribute, not a surface attribute

Two parks with the same surfacing can behave completely differently after rain, because drainage depends on the ground the site was built on and how it was graded.

Low-lying parks, parks beside creeks and parks built in old drainage basins hold water long after the rain stops, and visitors describe this specifically — a field that becomes a marsh, a path that floods at one particular corner, an area that stays soft for days.

Where accounts describe this, we record it as a qualifier on the surface reading rather than as a separate attribute, because it is site-specific rather than material-specific. If you are choosing somewhere the day after a storm, that qualifier is worth more than the material name.
