Surfacing is the attribute parents notice last and complain about most. Nobody chooses a playground for its ground cover, and then they spend the drive home getting wood chips out of a shoe.
Four materials cover almost everything in American public parks. Each solves the problem it was installed to solve and creates a different one.
Wood chips and engineered fiber
The most common surfacing under public play equipment, and the cheapest to install and top up.
What it does well. Genuine impact absorption when maintained at depth. Stays cool in direct sun — noticeably cooler than any synthetic surface. Drains reasonably.
What goes wrong. It migrates. Chips end up in shoes, in pockets, in the car, and on adjacent splash pads where they clog drains. It thins out under swings and slide exits, which are exactly the places where depth matters, so a surface that was compliant at installation may not be by the following summer. It hides things — broken glass and litter are far harder to spot in chips than on a solid surface, which is why accounts of poorly maintained parks mention it specifically.
Worst for. Crawling babies, and anyone pushing a stroller to the equipment.
Poured rubber
The solid, seamless surface, usually in blocks of color, increasingly standard in renovated playgrounds.
What it does well. Wheelchair and stroller accessible, which is often why it was chosen. Nothing gets into shoes. Litter is visible. Impact absorption does not depend on maintenance depth.
What goes wrong. Heat. Dark poured rubber in direct sun becomes uncomfortable to touch and radiates upward at exactly toddler height. In hot climates an unshaded rubber surface narrows the usable window as much as an unshaded slide does. It also cracks and lifts at the seams as it ages, and repairs are visible and expensive, so aging installations are often left in a shabby state for years.
Best for. Accessibility, mixed-ability groups, and anywhere the play area is shaded.
Sand
Common in older parks and in coastal cities.
What it does well. It is a toy as well as a surface. A meaningful share of the play value at a sand playground is the sand itself, and accounts from parents of two- to four-year-olds reflect that.
What goes wrong. Everything you would expect. It travels worse than wood chips. It compacts when wet and loses impact absorption. It attracts animals, and accounts of poorly maintained sand areas raise that directly.
Best for. Younger children, cooler months, and parents who have made peace with the car.
Artificial turf
Increasingly common in new installations, particularly where a park wants a green look with low water use.
What it does well. Even surface, no migration, no mud, stroller friendly, looks maintained year-round.
What goes wrong. It is the hottest surface of the four by a wide margin. Visitor accounts consistently describe equipment sitting on turf becoming too hot to use, and the turf itself radiating heat. Infill can scatter. Drainage varies enormously with installation quality, and a badly drained turf area holds water and smell after rain.
Worst for. Hot climates without shade. In practice turf and shade need to be read together, and turf without shade is a summer write-off in the southern half of the country.
How to actually use this
The surface matters most in two situations: when the child is at the age where they will be on the ground constantly, and when the temperature is high enough for the surface to be a heat source.
Outside those, it is a minor consideration. A nine-year-old in October does not care what is underfoot.
Practically:
- Under about two — favor rubber or sand, avoid deep wood chips
- Hot months — treat turf and dark rubber as requiring shade; wood chips and sand are the cool options
- Stroller or wheelchair — rubber is the only reliably navigable surface
- After rain — wood chips and sand drain, badly installed turf does not

How to read a surface complaint
The most useful thing in an account is rarely the material name. It is the complaint attached to it, because the complaint tells you which failure mode is actually happening at that site.
Wood chips tells you the material. The chips are thin under the swings tells you the surface has not been topped up recently, which is both a safety point and a signal about how well the site is maintained generally.
Artificial turf tells you the material. The slide gets hot in the sun tells you the site has turf and no shade over the equipment, which is a summer write-off in a hot climate and irrelevant in a mild one.
Sand tells you the material. Sand everywhere including the splash pad tells you the layout puts loose material next to water, which predicts drainage problems and a mess.
We record the material and the complaint separately for this reason. A surface value on its own is weak information; a surface value with the specific problem visitors kept mentioning is strong.
Maintenance is a surface attribute
Every one of these materials degrades, and each degrades in a way that matters.
Wood chips thin out where they are needed most and need topping up on a schedule. Poured rubber cracks and lifts at the seams, and repairs are expensive enough that aging installations often stay shabby for years. Sand compacts, and loses impact absorption when it does. Turf infill scatters and the base compacts, and badly drained turf holds water and smell after rain.
